F.A.Q.
Am I eligible to audition for Boise’s Funniest person?
BFP is a competition for average folks (21+) who are interested in giving stand-up comedy a shot. It is not an amateur competition – it is for comedy novices! Because of that, we require that potential contestants have approximately three months of experience or less. We say approximately, because comedy experience can be pretty tough to quantify, and everyone's situation is different.
We will gather detailed histories from everyone who auditions, and perform due diligence when necessary, to keep our guidelines consistent and fair. We strive to create as level a playing field as possible, in order to maintain the spirit and integrity of the competition.
If in doubt, come audition! We will evaluate your circumstances individually, and determine if you are eligible to take part.
What should I expect when I come to audition?
Once you arrive at Liquid, you will be asked to fill out an application and sign a release form. When it is your turn, you will be brought into a private room with the three audition judges. BFP auditions are very casual. We know you’re new to this, so we don’t expect a polished routine or monologue. We just want to get a feel for your personality and sense of humor! We’ll chat with you for a few minutes, ask you a couple questions, and probably have you stand behind a mic stand and tell us one of your favorite funny anecdotes. We’ll then take your photo, and send you on your way!
What’s the release for? What will I be signing?
It’s fairly standard image and video release. Each of the shows will be filmed and professionally photographed, and the release allows us to use photos and video of you to promote the event. We will also be filming some behind the scenes activities for a short documentary film. BFP claims no ownership over your material, or your future career!
When will I find out if I’ve been chosen?
We will notify the twenty individuals chosen to be our 2014 BFP Contestants by Monday, June 30th. There will be an optional (but highly recommended) workshop for contestants the next evening, July 1st, at 6:30pm at Liquid Laughs. It will cover the stand-up comedy basics, as well as what to expect throughout the competition. The workshop will be followed immediately by an open mic, during which our contestants will be guaranteed a time slot if they decide to get on stage!
What if I’m not chosen? Can I try out next year?
If you do not continue with stand-up comedy, and maintain your eligibility, you can certainly try out next year. But quite a few folks who did not make the top twenty last year continued on, with considerable success!

- You’ve never set foot on a comedy stage before? Perfect! This competition was designed for you!
- Have you attended a just handful open mics over the years? Or tried it a few times back in college? No problem. Come on out!
- Have you done amateur ensemble comedy theater or improv? Stand-up is a different beast altogether, so barring professional (paying) experience, you’re likely eligible.
- Have you ever (now or in the past) attended open mics regularly for more than three months? Sorry, but you’re too experienced for us. Keep it up, though!
- Have you ever been paid any amount to perform comedy, take part in a comedy showcase, or host/emcee a comedy show? That’s awesome! But, unfortunately, any professional comedy experience makes you ineligible to compete in Boise’s Funniest person.
